Centre became the Cherokee County seat in 1844. Weiss Lake, on the Coosa River, spreads across the county north of town. In town, the Centre Water Works and Sewer Board runs the city sewer. Past the reach of its lines, around the lake and across the county, homes run on septic. Most of the county is Valley and Ridge ground, and the valley soils weathered from limestone. They are mostly red clay under a silt loam surface. Every septic tank installation in Centre starts with a permit from the Cherokee County Health Department, on Cedar Bluff Road.
U.S. Highway 411 connects Centre with Gadsden to the west and Rome, Georgia, to the east. State Highway 9 also reaches the town. Leesburg, Cedar Bluff, Sand Rock and Gaylesville are the county's other main towns, and we cover them too. We are Affordable Septic and Plumbing, a septic company based in Piedmont. Part of Piedmont itself lies in Cherokee County. Septic is the only work we do. The company holds an Alabama Level II onsite wastewater installer license, the advanced state level. It covers engineered and large commercial onsite systems as well as conventional ones. We run three crews and own our excavation equipment, so the digging for tanks and trenches stays in-house. Behind the company are decades of septic installs. For septic system installation in Centre, we handle the permit with the county health department. The Coosa River was dammed in 1961 to create Weiss Lake, and most of the lake lies in Cherokee County. It covers 30,200 acres with 447 miles of shoreline and is often called the Crappie Capital of the World. Weiss is a storage lake, so its water level rises and falls with the seasons. It runs high through summer and is lowered by early fall, and the low point usually comes in December.
State rules keep septic systems out of reservoir easements and flood zones, which do not count toward lot size. The lake's shoreline guidance also asks lakefront owners to maintain septic tanks and drain fields under the local rules. Where a lake lot is too tight, the rules let an engineered design go below the standard minimum lot size. Ask about engineered septic systems in Centre, or drain field repair in Centre when an old lake field quits.
Decatur and Dewey soils are common in the Coosa River valley around the town. Decatur soil is very deep and well drained, with a silt loam top over a thick red clay subsoil. Up on the south end of Lookout Mountain around Sand Rock, most soils came from sandstone or shale instead. Ground can change from one lot to the next, so a soil test comes before anyone designs a system.
The soil tests are certified first, and the county health department issues the permit only after that. State rules also set minimum setback distances for tanks and drain fields, so the layout must fit the lot. We coordinate the soil work and the perc test as part of septic inspections in Centre. A system too worn to fix calls for septic system replacement in Centre, which goes through the same county permit office.
